Penwith Radio

Here are some questions that I prepared for going to Penwith Radio. I looked at the website and there wasn't much information to find out. Every link you clicked on it either said no information or this website will be updated soon. Below I have filled the answers in. This is the only information I could gather as we did not have much time to ask questions:

I think the negatives of this project are that it isn't very active and you are constantly working with them instead of being at college working on the project. I think the positives for this project are that the brief is really open and you can basically do anything you want with it.

The Tre Project

We are thinking about doing the Tre project. This is about making an archive film about the word home. This could be what you interpret to be home such as area, house, people. This would be a film made out of recent and archive footage. The brief is really open and can be practically anything. A women called Barbara came in on Friday and talked about the brief to us and what people have done in the past.

Here is what she said:
What are the aims of the project?
3 - 5 minute short film. They will distribute this onto the web and DVD.

What has the partner produced before?
Creative films, a DVD about Cornish related issues. Films, photography about farms (exhibited round Cornwall)

How did they get into the creative industries?
University course in television drama, working title films company. e.g. Bridget Jones, Four Weddings and a Funeral) worked in BBC 4. Start at bottom work up. moved Cornwall and started to make films. Made a film company.

What is their ethos?
Giving people a voice(opinions and feelings) giving people a chance to express their feelings. being able to explore their issues.

What do they need you to do?
pretty open project, make an archive film half new half old footage.

What are the time / project constraints?
Finish film by the end of term.

What is the social context?
The social context for this project is bringing communities together. For instance trying to connect the Isles of Scilly, with the rest of the UK. They will do this by working and connecting with the 5 schools in the Isles of Scilly, and work with schools here.

The ethos is to give people in the community a chance to express their feelings and explore their issues that they are interesting. She quoted ' Giving people a voice'. This means the above.

I think the positives of this project are that there are a lot of subjects you could make this film about because everyone has a different opinion on home. The negatives are that you have to work with archive film in some sort of way.

They are funded by themselves. Basically they do a project and profits from that pay for the next project and some spare money just in case needed.

This project could lead to varied opportunities such as showing our films at the Cornwall Film Festival. This is the kind of standards she would like. The Tre project would like us to really get creative and make a film themed on home using archive and recent footage. If they like it then we could show it at Cornwall Film Festival and other venues around Cornwall and get our work and us noticed. It's not just colleges they are working with it is Communities in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly to find out what home really means to us and how archive film inspires and informs us about our past and future. Also they want to find out what stories should be re-captured in the Westerly part of Great Britain.

The Exchange

The exchange is a contemporary art gallery in penzance and newlyn as it is split into two halfs. They have all different kinds of exhibits held from a range of different artists. They also offer free drop in sessions for people so that they can participate in different activities such as art or clay work or something creative. They like to work with the community alot. They work with local schools, colleges and other resources. Funding is quite difficult, as every project they do they have to go and really search for someone to fund their projects.

Galowen Festival

This is an organisation that runs festivals and other activities similar to this in Penzance. They are funded by Penzance Council and by how much they make in the festival after they have paid everyone else. There all sorts they provide in the festival such as old fashioned trains, parades stalls on the side of the road, fireworks and lots of other activities. This has been run for 20years now. You have to have quite alot of skills to do this job such as patience, organisational skills and some others. You also have to think quite creatively. This is a vlounteer career to everyone who organizes it.

The Acorn

We visited the acorn on tuesday. A lady gave us a talk about what the Acorn is about.

The Acorn offer lots of different oppurtunities for people to try out such as theatre, Dance, Music and others. They also offer renting sessions there I think it's £160 for the small hall and £260 for the big hall for the night. They do gigs, private parties, performances, singing and dancing groups. They have to finish at 12 though as the sound is an issue to the neighbours near by.

Penlee House Gallery

On tuesday we went to Penlee House Gallery. They gave us a little talk about what they have on there and about their exhibitions.
Penlee house is funded by the lottery fund. I think to do the job you have to have good communication skills, knowledge about the project, and skills in art. I would think you have to have a CRB check if you were working with all kinds of people, young and old.
